21st & 22nd September @ Venue TBC – National Finals
How does it work?
Northumberland can take a team of up to 4 athletes in each age group to the regional qualifiers in June. Selection for the team is based on previous combined events performances, and performances in individual events. The selectors will aim to take the strongest team in each age group. For both the regional qualifiers, and national finals, the format of the weekend is as follows:
Junior Girls (school years 8 & 9) – Pentathlon – Sunday
Junior Boys (school years 8 & 9) – Pentathlon – Saturday
Inter Girls (school years 10 & 11) – Heptathlon – Sat & Sun
Inter Boys (school years 10 & 11) – Octathlon – Sat & Sun
Senior Girls (school years 12 & 13) – Heptathlon – Sat & Sun
Senior Boys (school years 12 & 13) – Decathlon – Sat & Sun
At the regional qualifiers, our team will compete against other counties from the North East Region. At the end of the competition, the winning team from each category (based on points achieved by top 3 scorers from that county) will progress to national finals as a team (including the 4th athlete). Furthermore, the top 2 individual athletes that are not part of the winning county will also proceed to national finals. Finally, further places will be allocated to further high scoring athletes from all of the regional events around the country.
How to get involved?
Combined events competitions are truly special, and come with a brilliant atmosphere, and their own set of demands. Its important that athletes are able to complete each event in their competition safely, and we encourage athletes/parents to speak with their schools and/or clubs about training for specific events.
