Essentially the NSAA is a competition provider for local authority and private schools in Northumberland, Newcastle and North Tyneside.

NSAA also selects school athletes to represent the county at Inter-County and National events. Attendance at national events may involve one or two over-nights at hotels, which each member of the team must agree to, or he/she is requested to decline the invitation.
